Question: Surely a Merlin Helicopter defending itself with lasers would cause damage to the other aircraft that it is trying to defend itself from, wouldn't it?

  Yes potentially, but generally the lasers are used against missiles which are travelling through the air, perhaps from the ground. By the time a missile is closing in on our Merlin, there probably won’t be any other aircraft nearby, and the laser is able to aim with such precision that it only hits the seeker of the missile. Very clever!
