If the Earth suddenly stopped, then the biggest effect will come straight from the atmosphere that will still be in motion. On the surface the earth is rotating at about 1100 mph, so if rotation stopped, you would have a sudden wind of 1100mph! This would rip anything not secured to bedrock up and into the atmosphere. So buildings, trees, people (not underground) will all be destroyed. If rotations stopped gradually, then we would have a day night cycle that lasted a year, meaning all wind patterns would shift to go from equator to pole as opposed to around the equator, and the temperature gradient would hugely increase, meaning places in sunlight will over time become much hotter due to not having a night to cool in. If we were to survive, we would likely have to live nomadically, moving with the dawn/dusk to stay in a band not to hot or cold.
