Yes. I couldn’t work in an office or do anything that was regular and predictable. That said, I did pretty much fall into this job because of circumstance. But it was always going to be science – although there are lots of other things I would love to be!

No – to be honest I didn’t quite process that you could get paid to learn about space until university. I don’t know why that didn’t click for me until so late, but it was sort of a revelation – “hey, I can actually do this as a job, and not just be really interested in it and do something else!”. I did really like space when I was younger – if I had known it was a solid career path I probably would have made more of a goal of it!

I always wanted to be a scientist of some sort, but when I was younger I wanted to study space and be an astronomer. In fact, when I first heard that there was a subject called ‘theoretical physics’ that involved sitting at a desk and doing maths, I told my physics teacher it sounded really boring!

Now, here I am, working on a PhD in theoretical physics and I absolutely love it. Mathematics is the language of nature, and hidden inside maths are all sorts of incredible patterns and clues to how the universe works. From my desk, with a pen and a piece of paper, I can zoom into the heart of an atom or zoom out and study the structure of the entire universe. I can’t imagine a more fun, interesting or worthwhile job!

Like many young kids I wanted to be everything at one point or another, but I mostly kept switching between Astrophysics and Palaeontology – Because who doesn’t like Dinosaurs as a kid! Through Secondary school and Sixth form however I knew whatever I did had to be Astrophysics, though only during university did I realise that it could be a proper career. In fact, I couldn’t imagine myself doing any other job, it would just be so.. boring!

I had no idea I’d work with aircraft! And it was kind of an accident that I ended up doing it. I knew I liked maths… but I thought I’d end up as a spy or something. Maybe I did… Haha. I do work with lasers…
