Most scientists are pretty sure global warming is real. As for how to stop it, there we’re not so sure. Everyone needs to do their part in cutting carbon emissions – this means not using polluting forms of transport like cars and aeroplanes wherever possible, recycling when we can and trying not to waste electricity and other resources. In the long run, we need some new technologies to combat the problem – and that’s what science is for!

Fortunately I don’t have to ‘believe’ in global warming – every single data set we have tells us that the earth is warming. For more dramatic examples, look at the pictures of the villages in the arctic that are now falling into the sea. Those houses have been there for a long time, and in the last few years, change has gotten quite severe.

We need to use mass transit more and recycle more, as Steven mentioned, but we also need to push our governments to take it seriously and take action at that level.

@freddie Global warming is a fact. And the human contribution is well recorded and real. What is also interesting is that in the course of Earth’s history there have been many episodes of warming and cooling far more extreme than what we are experiencing now, so the Earth is able to survive these events rather well. The difference this time is that it is people who have caused this, and the rate at which the Earth is warming is extremely fast.
What to do? The trouble is that in politics, governments tend to think about only the next few years – what policies will keep them in at the next election. So it is for people like us to persuade governments worldwide to take this seriously.
