      Darkness is what we observe when there isn’t much light bouncing into our eyeballs, or when that light that is getting there is of a sort that can’t be processed by our retinas.

      As the others have said, darkness is just what you get when light isn’t there. It’s kind of like how ‘cold’ is just ‘lack of heat’!
