Well there was a piece of work I did a few years ago where the only way I could explain it was to describe the Earth’s inner core in terms of a pudding!

I study galaxy collisions, and probably the weirdest thing I’ve figured out is that they spend a lot more time being impacted by the early stages of the collision than we thought! At first we thought the result was a bug in my code, and we spent a few weeks trying to make it go away, and couldn’t… Surprise!

The weirdest thing I’ve discovered so far is still a secret because I haven’t finished writing the research paper yet, so I can’t tell anyone!

I’ll give you a hint, though. My research revolves around so-called ‘quantum phases of matter’. You’ve probably heard of the normal types of matter like solid, liquid, gas and perhaps plasma, but there are tens (maybe even hundreds) of other types of matter out there. I’ve found two new ones already during my PhD, and with my newest research, I think I’ve found another really strange new one that people thought shouldn’t be able to exist…sssshhh, though, don’t tell anyone!
