• Question: why do you study forces and why do you enjoy it

      @ChrismdTGS It is not so much that I study forces – it’s just that in understanding stuff, you are always coming across forces. In my case it is the forces acting on materials in the Earth’s core. It’s the bigger problem we are trying to understand, and to do so we need to be able to work out and understand the forces acting on the materials in the cores of planets

      I mainly study quantum mechanics, but to understand quantum mechanics I need to make use of a lot of electromagnetism, so I find the electromagnetic force tends to pop up in most of the research I do. I study quantum mechanics because it’s weird, fun and totally unlike any other field of science I’ve ever come across – I enjoy it because I like learning new things, and there’s so much about quantum mechanics we don’t understand, and so much still to learn!
